October Meeting (In Person / Virtual)
A2L refrigerant changeover
Presented by Douglas Tucker, Director of Industry and Government Relations at Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc.
ASHRAE, a world leader in refrigerant technology, research, and standards development, is currently supporting a global transition to the use of lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants to reduce the effects of our technologies on the environment. The Montreal Protocol banned the use of CFC refrigerants and is working to phase out the use of HCFC refrigerants worldwide. The replacement HFC refrigerants, such as R-410A and R-134a, have zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), but have a high GWP and are under increasing regulatory scrutiny in the US. Refrigerant producers, assisted by organizations such as ASHRAE, have developed new refrigerants that are classified as zero or near-zero ozone depleting and have a lower GWP than those currently in use. Many proposed lower GWP refrigerants are classified as flammable which will require changes in how systems using these refrigerants are designed and applied. This presentation will provide an update on industry and regulatory activities related to the phase down of HFC refrigerants and the transition to lower-GWP refrigerants, including the policy issues driving the demand for alternative refrigerants, changes in critical codes and standards (such as ASHRAE Standard 15), a discussion of low-GWP refrigerant options, and an overview of the challenges in utilizing flammable refrigerants in comfort conditioning systems.

Recruiting and Retention of the next Generation - Gen Z
Presented by DL Julia Keen, PhD, PE, HBDP, FASHRAE Professor of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science at Kansas State University
All employers are in the position that they need to replace long-term employees who change jobs or retire. One of the obvious choices to fill these voids in personnel is to promote existing employees and hire individuals that just completed their degrees to the newly vacated positions. The success of these hires does not typically depend on their technical capacity or capability but instead is related to issues of expectation, communication, motivation, and fit. Success of recruiting and retaining generation Z hires is important for the success of companies. This presentation identifies the unique attributes of this newer generations entering the workforce and provides recommendations to increase the odds of retaining these employees.

May Meeting (Lunch)
2030 and Beyond – Opportunities for a Clean Energy Economy
Presented by Dunstan Macauley, PE
Vice President, ASHRAE Board of Directors
Global climate change is arguably the most important issue today; especially in the design and engineering of the built environment. With buildings responsible for about 40% of carbon dioxide emissions, many policies are being developed that focus on the decarbonization of buildings. Many jurisdictions are now requiring new buildings to be low carbon or net-zero in the near-term and other policies are requiring retrofits of existing building stock in the medium to long term to decarbonize. As we transition to a clean energy economy, the built environment will undergo significant transformation to provide the resources needed to design and build zero carbon and resilient buildings.

Special Hazards
Presented by Cicero Humberto Aidar, Global Learning & Development Manager at Chubb Risk Engineering Center
This month’s chapter meeting will be a Joint meeting with Lehigh Valley IFMA
Special hazards present unique and greater fire peril to facilities. Rapidly developing fires and explosions can occur with flammable liquid use, dusty operations, flammable gas use, exotic metals, and so on. While fire sprinklers designed for occupancy hazards generally control building fires, special hazards exposures generally require additional levels of protection for control and/or suppression.
